Live from New York, it’s Cheeseburger Saturday Night. Tonight’s host is The Hollywood Diner (originally headed for Arthur’s Tavern in Hoboken) and featuring the Ready For Prime Beef Player, Marty Wombacher. Ladies and gentlemen please welcome the Hollywood Diner!

Alright, since I haven't gone out in a couple of nights, I thought we'd venture out of the city and go to Hoboken in New Jersey. I found a place there called Arthur's Tavern that's supposed to have great cheeseburgers.

And it's down into the bowels of the subway we go.

Oh no, this guy again.

Aaahhhh!

This way to the PATH train to Hoboken.

Grumbler alert!

Jesus fucking Christ, it's hotter than hell down here and it's empty, which means a train must've just left. Looks like we might have a bit of a wait.

Two people texting away.

Here's where we're headed when the train finally shows up.

It's been twenty minutes and still no train. I'm having a Clash moment here.

And these two continue their texting.

It's starting to get crowded down here and still no train.

Sweet mother of fuck, it's been almost 45 minutes and there's no train in sight. Everybody down here is getting antsy.

It's really crowded down here. When the train does finally come, it'll be packed with all these people. I'm starting to feel a little claustrophobic down here.

You know what?

It's time to improvise, maybe we'll try Arthur's next week.

When in doubt, stay close to home and hit the good old Hollywood Diner.

There's always a seat at the counter...

And friendly people to take your order. One cheeseburger please!

First up, a much needed beer.

They love Lucy in here...

See what I mean?

Cake!

And here's the cheeseburger! I got the English burger which has cheddar cheese and is served on an English Muffin. Note the star of mustard they put on the burger.

I also got onion rings, they look great.

A delicious burger, right in my own neighborhood.

On my way out I thanked the cook in the kitchen for excellent work. Goodnight everybody and see you tomorrow after dark.

Cheeseburger Rating
Three Wimpy’s. A fine burger indeed!

That's what you get for trying to go to Jersey! Glad you found a good meal close to home. I love sandwiches made on an english muffin, but never tried a burger, sounds good. Now off to get caught up...

I would have left after about 10-15 minutes of waiting for that PATH.

UFB to PATH !

August 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGENE

The PATH to Hell is paved with good intentions. I don't think the Hollywood Dinner has a complete grasp on just what exactly makes a meal kosher. I was going to give the Grumbler a pass, then realized she's still in the MTA section of the station, not the PATH.

I always have to hit that applause button. I can't help myself!
The Star Of Mustard came into existance when two Jewish immigrants were trapped in an elevator in Hoboken, I think it was Hoboken. Oh, I don't know. Anyway, they were not found for two two months. (I guess the elevator wasn't used much.) Now, where was I? Hoboken, maybe? Well, when their dried up, decrepitated bodies were found, one of them had drawn a Star Of David on the floor with a squirt mustard bottle that he had pulled from his little shopping bag. Needless to say, the sacred image of the Star of Mustard caught on with the Jewish community in Hoboken. Party! I didn't know you were Jewish and you're not even from Hoboken! What gives?

Arthur Treachers Fish and Chips....haven't seen one of those in over thirty years! Last time I ate at one of those, I was tripping my brains out and getting ready to attend a B - cult horror film late night double feature in downtown Minneapolis. Those were the days.

August 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJaws the Cabbie

@Jaws: There used to be an Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips in the Manhattan Mall, directly over the PATH station to Hoboken! I ate there once, decided I must have been tripping, and never went back.

@kari: As you've seen, my last cheeseburger night was inspired by the Hollywood's English burger.

@GENE: It was crazy and they didn't even have any announcements about the train being late. Definitely a UFB moment!

@csp: "The PATH to Hell is paved with good intentions." Exactly!

@Danny Maness: Ha! My head is spinning after that comment!

@csp: There used to be one in the East Village too, but it just closed.

@Jaws: Ah, tripping and B horror movies, those were the days indeed!

Wow....that's worse than the 'M' train wait....a big UFB to Marty for waiting even that long...

The absolute best thing about the Hollywood Diner: they have ads in their menu. Read ads, for other places, real estate, hardware, that sort of thing.

August 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commenteranonymous 271

@Smoopy: UFB for sure!

@anonymous271: Those aren't ads, they're specialty sandwiches. Hope to see you at the International Bar today!

Well maybe next time for Arthur's. I loved that first Arthur movie,,,best scene was when he went to talk to Susan's father and kept asking about the moose hanging on the wall,,,tough room. Never cared for Arthur Treachers like I never got into KFC,,,,. Arthur Avenue in the little Italy section of the Bronx, with wonderful mom and pop restaurants and pastry shops,,,,,just to add an Arthur here.

that wait for PATH looked almost frightening...that meal looked great...MAD you do eat way better than i Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips...not bad if one felt like a piece of "fish"...think it's now a bank...

What do you know? Haven't you heard of suspension of disbelief?

I wanna see Lucy do pudding face. It looks really humid in NYC at the moment. I'm kinda happy being rugged up and warm. If that was me, I would have waited 10mins max for the train....fuck it looks hot as fuck in that subway!

@Al: The frist Atthur movie was the only Arther movie! I need to check out Arthur Ave. thanks for the tip!

@rr: It was a great meal. Thanks for the Ed Wood quote!

@Clacky: I'm never waiting that long again! It was too fucking hot down there!

Would have been great to see a place from my neighborhood on this site. Arthur's is an old time classic here in Hoboken. We have some pretty good drinking establishments too!

August 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPeter

@Peter: I'll try next week for sure, if you want to join me let me know.

August 15, 2011 | Registered CommenterMarty After Dark

Would have loved to join you, but I won't be around on Saturday. Thanks for the invitation though, and I'll make sure to read all about it on MAD! Enjoy!!

That was very brave of you to attempt a trip to Jersey. Those onion rings at the diner look fan-tas-tic. Heartburn inducing, but excellent.

August 15, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBritta

I like a place that stocks little cereal boxes next to the beer. Makes it seem just fine to order a brew for breakfast.

August 15, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBiff

@Britta: I'll try Hoboken again soon. And the onion rings were great and I didn't get heartburn from them! I heart that!

@Biff: Me too!

Great choice in skipping the train and the long trek to Jersey. It looks like a fun time and good food was had right nearby.

Yum onion rings and Beer!
