Live, from New York, it’s Cheeseburger Saturday Night! Starring Burger & Barrel and featuring the ready for prime beef player, Marty Wombacher. Ladies and gentlemen...Burger & Barrel!

(But first a word from our sponsor)

(We now return to our broadcast, already in progress.)

And we're off. It's a holiday weekend and the city's quieter than usual. I love three day weekends in New York!

We're taking a cab there. I read some frightening subway news over at EV Grieve!

And here we are at the Burger & Barrel, looks nice, let's go inside.

Wow, nice and dark inside, I think Al would like this place.

And the lovely and friendly Emma serves up a can of Porkslap Ale.

Some of the lit up bottles behind the bar.

They have beer and a full bar, but this place is known for its wine selection. Bottles line the wall around the bar.

The view from my perch at the bar.

Some of the specials are listed on a chalkboard on a wall opposite the bar.

My beer illuminated by...FIRE!

And now for a look at the menu. Emma suggested I try the Bash Burger, so that's exactly what I ordered. It comes with Tater Tots!

Emma places the order and through the magic of this thing called the internet...

Here it is in all its glory! It's a giant burger, topped with two onion rings. And it comes with Tater Tots!

Burp! It was delicious, right up there with the Juicy Lucy!

Obligatory bathroom mirror shot! Goodnight everybody and see you tomorrow after dark.

My Meal
They have several styles of burgers at Burger & Barrel but Emma suggested the Bash Burger which is a burger with carmelized onions, bacon jam, pickles and cheese. Yeah, you read right, bacon jam! It was delcious and while it wasn’t better than Whitman’s Juicy Lucy, it was just as good. So for now the B&B’s Bash Burger and Whitman’s Juicy Lucy top the burger list here at MAD. Oh and the Tater Tots were excellent as well!

Cheeseburger Rating
Four Wimpy’s, and that’s as good as it gets!

Bonus photo
MAD commenter and one third of the BBC, Gene Rubbico spotted a vanishing species at the bar, Down the Hatch in Locust Point, MD. He captured a shot of the ever-elusive cigarette machine and sent it in. Great shot, thanks Gene!

Great burger at B and B,,,even better than the burger was that beautiful Emma. What a great smile. And yes, a dark bar is always tops. How about that video of "Good time Charlie", absolutely put me in a trance watching it, in a good way. B and B reminded me of that good old after dinner drink Benedictine and Brandy, B & B, good stuff.

That burger looks almost as good as Emma, but not quite! :) Loved today's surprise link and Gene's bonus photo! That machine looks straight out of the '70s! Nice find, Gene!

I've learned from my mistakes, and will not post a link to some low-brow definitions of Pork Slap.
Other than the odd beer, dinner looked delightful.

@GENE: Haha, nice. I used to work with teamsters. We had one of those in the lunchroom. They would get four guys together, flip the machine, and boom; free cigarettes for everyone. (Eventually they stopped refilling the machine.)

@MAD: I just remembered, there is a cigarette machine in the "Karma" bar/nite club/smoke shop in the East Village. It's all modern and stupid looking though, probably not worth the trip.

Your burger looked unusual to say the least, but that Jesus in the Pizza looked Goddamned scary...more like Charles Manson if you ask me, if my delivery guy brought me one like that, I'd have all my locks changed. Oh, speaking of scary, I just heard about a new horror movie cult hit called 'Human Centepide'...enough to make you urp your granola...google it if you don't believe me...

@GENE: I did the same thing with a pizza in Peoria! I was bombed put a frozen pizza in the oven, promptly passed out and woke up to an apartment filled with smoke and neighbors pounding on the door. Whoops! Thanks for the bonus photo!

@Al: Emma was a great bartender, not only easy on the eyes, but really friendly and quick with a refill. I've never had B&B, I'll have to give it a shot one of these nights.

@Barfly: Gene found a winner alright! And I agree with your Emma comment!

@csp: Come on, we love low brow here! I'll check out the Karma machine, thanks for the tip!

@Jaws: I couldn't make it through the trailer of that thing! Sheesh! Almost as scary as Cardboard Box Man!

Thank you for Not Smoking. Cigarette smoke is the residue of your pleasure. It contaminates the air, pollutes my hair and clothes, not to mention my lungs. This takes place without my consent. I have a pleasure, also. I like a beer now and then. The residue of my pleasure is urine. Would you be annoyed if I stood on a chair and pissed on your head and your clothes without your consent?

While bacon is wonderful on a burger, just the name bacon jam is disturbing. But the food did look great. I'm very pleased to say I have never had a line used on me that was cheesy enough to be included on that list!

May 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkari

@kari: Bacon jam does sound gross, but it was delicious!

Those Ciggy machines are all too common on these shores.

@Clacky: Send in a photo of one if you can!

That looks like a kick-ass burger. The bison sliders sound good too - we used to make buffalo burgers all the time before we bought half a cow and realized our entire freezer would be full of hamburger.

May 31, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBritta

@Britta: You bought half a cow? Where do you make that kind of transaction?

May 31, 2011 | Registered CommenterMarty After Dark

I am intrigued by the bacon jam. Must try. Love that beer can and the place looks nice and comfy. Plus, pickle shots! Score!

May 31, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBiff

@Biff: To Pickle Shots!

May 31, 2011 | Registered CommenterMarty After Dark

I actually bought half a cow, pig and lamb and intend to do the same this year. There's a Mennonite farmer about 45 minutes West of us that does grass-fed, humanely raised animals that he sells - it's crazy cheap and it comes all butchered and vacuum sealed - we did have to buy a chest freezer to store it all. I will occasionally go down there and get raw milk/cheese/yogurt and eggs too - it's awesome.

May 31, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBritta

@Britta: That sounds like a great deal! I don't think I could pull that off in Manhattan!
