May 18, 2011

I’ve written before that I’ll never blog about my night job because I don’t want to get dooced and have to try and find another one. A lot of you don’t even know what I do to pay my rent and bills. Let’s just say what I do is about a half a step above a shit-shoveler, although on bad nights it can be a step below. When I came in, today I thought that due to a job we had to get out, I thought I was going to be stuck here till around six in the morning. But things happened and now I’m getting ready to go and it’s around 12:30 in the morning. And I’m dog-tired.

I could just say, “Fuck it,” go home and put up a couple videos or something, but I feel I owe it to you good people that come here and read this everyday to at least go out and try. So that’s exactly what I’m going to do, go out and try. Let’s see where the night leads this weary soul.

And here we go. It rained earlier and it's a chilly night for a mid-May evening/morning.

The sign says: "Walk this way," so I do.

Must...cross...street...

How odd, I feel like I have no control over my body. I pray I don't shit or piss my pants, that would be truly embarrassing.

Penn Station...I must enter...I don't know why...

Good Gods...I'm walking down the escalator...something I have railed against in the past...I shove past the blonde on the left and...

Head towards the second escalators. Must go down...I have no idea why...I just know I have to follow my impulses.

Down...down...down...

Must...turn...left...

Down the hallway...but...to...where? KHAN!

Of course, the Papaya in Penn Station! My Fortress of Solitude! The perfect stop on such a grueling night.

They have beer in here! Four bucks for a 32 ouncer! Perfect.

And it's served up with a smile!

The joint is empty except for the workers.

My dog and drink. And this can only lead to...napkin drawings!

The body of work, an empty hot dog holder and half of my second 32 ounce beer, on such a tired evening.

And suddenly the escalator to...

Gumby! Goodnight everybody and see you tomorrow after dark!

Before I die, I have to have a beer there! Loved the demo of Cuddly Toy and then the finished product!

I saw that Papaya coming from a mile away ! ...... thanks for the detailed directions to find it ..... I must have a hot dog & beer from there on Friday !

May 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGENE

@GENE: I also saw that damn papaya coming from TWO miles away....shit, I hate when that happens. Hey Marty,,,,ever see the movie "Lords of Discipline", the famous line was "I loathe deliberate cruelty because I'm a soldier not a sadist", kind of applies to Papaya, hey but at least you got out,, that's worth points in itself. Us soldiers of 365 and MAD will forge ahead.

@Barfly: I like hearing Harry talk before the demo!

@GENE: I knew everybody would see it coming, it was part of the joke! And yes, you must stop there on Friday! Let's try and meet after I'm done working that night as well.

@Al: I've never seen that movie, need to put it in my Netflix Queue, I'm off to work now and fear another bad night, but tomorrow I'm off work for the Joey Ramone Birthday Bash, that post will be up Friday, so even if tonight's a bit of a dud, we've got a good post coming up!

You fell for the Chinese fire drill. It's always a Chinese fire drill when there's advanced warning.
It's the Spanish Inquisition you have to worry about. No one ever expects the Inquisition.

P.S. I do believe that you are touching that defenseless Gumby inappropriately.

What happened to the Cardboard Box Man drawing ? ... it's not on the table with the others :(

@csp .... very inappropriately !!

Holy snapple! Four bucks for a 32 ouncer? Sweet!

You really like to go to Penn Station allot , to bad it's not the original Penn Station , & if it was I would be hanging out there after work allot , it was such Great Architect .

@csp: I'd love to respond to your comment but I'm expecting the Spanish Inquisition at any moment!

@GENE: I had put it back in the Rolling Stone to take it home and forgot to display it with the others. I had had three of those beers so my thinking was clouded by my drinking! And Gumby likes me to touch him that way. We have a special relationship!

@Meleah: How sweet it is!

@JHwang: I only go there when I'm too tired to go anywhere else, it's handy.

YOU'RE LUCKY TO HAVE A JOB! Also, I especially like your camera drawing.

May 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBiff

@csp, GENE and Marty...well, Gumby certainly looks like he's enjoying himself...hmmm. Haven't heard that cuddly toy song in decades...the memories that accumulate here at MAD, even on a dog tired I just want to go home day!

@M.A.D.; try not to get any gumby juice on your hot dog...mayonaise on a hot dog...blech!

May 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJaws the Cabbie

The camera drawing is great. If you need to rest--it is okay with me--I will always love your blog and Gumby too whether you post everyday or not!!! Thanks for the devotion. I feel that way too.
BTW--Joe's Superette which I mentioned in a previous comment is closing in Carroll Gardens. BOO!

"it's a chilly night for a mid-May evening/morning."...what an understatement....it's fucking cold for mid-may IMHO...whether one saw it comin' or not...what a great way to "unwind" after the job...a couple beers solitude and some fine sketches (especially cardboard box man)....than the surprise link get me thinkin' ( i do that once in awhile) 'bout commercials ah ads if you will...here are a couple classics....especially the one w/ the line "The Intimate Scent of a Beautiful Woman":

Solitude has its own very strange beauty to it.

@Biff: I hate to admit it, but sadly I do feel lucky to have a job! I'm a broken man!

@Jaws: Ha ha ha! Disgusting, but funny!

@Melanie: Thanks! And that really sucks about Joe's Superette! When's it closing?

@rr: It was the perfect way to wind down! Thanks for the linkage! And a timely quote as I'll be seeing Liv
Tyler's mom tomorrow!

@rr: Regarding your Cardboard Box Man quote: AAAAHHHHH!

Marty, we definitely have to go on one of those nocturnal treks. If anyone could entice me to go above 14th Street, it would be the Marcel Proust of NYC's nightlife underbelly. As mentioned earlier, my schedule will be very flexible come June.

@Uncle Waltie: I think we met at the International last year! Let's meet in June for sure!

96oz of beer must have lead to a blissful pee break !

I just noticed that your drawing of cardboard man looks kind of like the pluggie-innie part of an extension cord.

May 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBiff

@Biff: It does! Nice observation!

May 19, 2011 | Registered CommenterMarty After Dark

You walked down the escalator? Wow that must have been some bad night at work. I'm very sad we didn't make it out on Sunday before we left so I could try a papaya. I'll have to save it for the next trip. And I'm lame because I didn't see it coming. I love your drawings, but I don't think you did Adele's beauty justice. I have no idea who JJ Cale is, but I liked that song.

rr, nice link. I especially enjoyed the Utah reject and was amused and disturbed by the AIDES one.

May 20, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkari

@kari: We'll definitely stop here next trip! And yes, it was a bad night at work!
