I don’t eat a lot of steak, but every once in a while I get a craving for it. And tonight that craving has kicked in big time. A while back, MAD commenter and 365 co-pilot, Al, suggested I go to Sparks, a classic New York steak house, which I’ve never been to. That was going to be tonight’s destination, but then I found out they’re not open Sunday’s. Now that’s old school! I’ll have to take a cheeseburger break one of these Saturday’s and try it out. In the meantime, I remembered another classic joint in midtown, Gallagher’s. So that’s where Sunday dinner is happening this week.
Here we are, Gallagher's Steak House.
The meat in the window makes me think of SCTV's 3-D House of Beef.
The main dining room is crowded...
So I decide to sit at the bar.
Will the bartender chats with some regulars at the bar.
Classic red checked tablecloth covered tables line the wall opposite the bar. And there's tons of pictures everywhere, let's check some of them out.
Here's a Gallagher's staff portrait from days gone by.
A signed photo of Paul Newman proclaiming Gallagher's as, "The best!"
Here's Mohammed Ali signing a table.
And here's another boxer, Max Baer who is also the father of Max Baer, Jr. a.k.a. Jethro Bodine.
This clown painting creeps me out a little.
And back at the bar, it looks like dinner is about to be served!
I got the jumbo lump crab meat salad to start it all off. It was really good and the sauce was super tangy. Will told me they use homemade horseradish in it.
And now the main course, I got the signature dish, the 14 ounce prime sirloin steak. They age the steaks for 21 days.
For a side dish I got the sauteed mushrooms.
Now that's a steak!
One of the best Sunday dinner's ever! I had a Budweiser for dessert. Goodnight everybody and see you tomorrow after dark.

Hey, Marty, was that lady trying to trade a baby for a drink?
Wonderful looking lump crab meat salad,,,,and steak. Very hard to find Paul Newman's autograph in a public place,,,,he didn't sign too many,,,,someone asked him for one once while he was taking a piss and he got pissed, go figure. The link to Jethro's Casino is very interesting. Max tried for years to kill Jethro,,,,he was so typecast, eventually he figured the hell with it,,,Im gonna love Jethro and make money from him,, great post today.
Oh, dude, now you've got me drooling bigtime. Can't remember a time when I ate that well! Say Marty, that SCTV clip reminded me of that e-mail exchange we had some time ago regarding Nightmare Theatre with Milton Budd, Peoria's signature late night horror show from years gone by, a big part of my early childhood and probably yours too. Was wondering if you were ever going to devote a M.A.D. post to Nightmare Theatre in the future...I used to low-crawl past my parents bedroom and sneak downstairs to catch that show on T.V. with the sound turned WAY down. Lots of memories associated with that show...
@Grade "A" Karen: Ha! Actually she was asking if they would grill the child. Nothing tastier than grilled baby meat!
@Al: I've heard that Gallagher's was one of Paul Newman's favorite places in NYC. I thought the Jethro thing was interesting too.
@Jaws: Memories! That was a great show, maybe I'll write something about it down the road. I'll be back in Peoria in a couple weeks.
I don't really like to see meat just hanging around like that. I used to have a recurring nightmare as a child where I was lost in the meat section at a local store that whole sides of beef hanging from hooks. Not a fan.
Before i found out i was allergic to shellfish i used to get a dish called steak louie.. its basically a filet with crab on it..
then one day i had it for new years and needed an epishot.
I'm a true steak fan.
years of vegetarian turned around and backfired after i went back to meat.. fuck chicken and pork
give me a slab of cow..
best cow ever was in montana believe it or not.
big timber, montana. home of big steak and the unabomber.
fucking awesome steak.. fit the whole plate..
now i want a steak for lunch...
Ha ha. I was going to be Captain Original and make a Gallagher joke, then I clicked on the surprise link.
<sigh>
It would have been a decent joke, with picking out your own cow and mallets; or some such shit.
@kari: That's a bizarre nightmare you had! Freud would've had a field day with that!
@Gidgie: Steak Louie sounds great, I'll have to keep my eyes open for that! Good to know about Montana, I've also heard they have dental floss farms there!
@csp: Sorry to have beaten you to the mallet!
@MAD: I'm just as slow with my wallet.
Mmm....your dinner looks DE-LISH! It's making me reconsider the frozen Skyline chili I'm about to have for dinner. Also, I can't figure out if the clown in that picture is a man or a woman. It kind of reminds me of a cross between Liberace and the coach from "Glee."
@csp: My wallet will be slowing down after the new year, if you know what I mean and I know you do!
@Biff: It was a great Sunday dinner! Never having seen Glee, I don't get the reference, so now I may have to watch it.
Steak = MY FAVORITE dinner EVER.
Wow .... that looks good ! .... couldn't imagine a dinner any better than that !
Agreed on the Sparks recommendation. Let me know when you go, I'll go with ya.
@meleah: I agree and that was one of the best steaks ever!
@GENE: It definitely rates right up there and great service too.
@Shwan: Will do, I have to try that place out!
Marty - What was the tab?
@Tom: $120 with the tip. Not cheap, but when the meal is this good, I don't mind splurging once in a blue moon.
It's 'Sledge-O-Matically Delicious!"
Great looking meal.
You have to be good to yourself once in a while!
Let's try and catch up this week.
Finals week here.
@"Boris:" A great meal indeed, a holiday treat! And yes, let's catch up this week! Good luck with the finals, I'm sure you'll ace them all!
My favorite animal is steak.

@rr: I agree with Fran! Great quote!
Yum and juicy.
@Melanie: That sums it up perfectly!
The first time I walked by Gallagher's, I stood and drooled in front of that window for a good 10 minutes... at least. Mmmmmmmm
@Lindsay: Their steaks are some of the best in town, nice old-school joint!
@Marty: Just look at that clown painting and subtract the Liberace influence. Voila! Glee coach.
I think Karen is right! its the old trade your baby for a bud routine!
@Green Monkey: If I would've known you could trade your children for booze, maybe I would've had some!
